Spedo no go

Has any one else had the speedometer fail?

Mine started picking up more speed them I was going and then started slowing down with a few times back and forth. Now it just works for a few miles and then settles to "0". odometer is still ticking up the miles at 111K.
If so what was the coast of repairs?
Thanks

I have read about this on the dieselplace.com forum. I think GM has a recall because of it, and some letters have been sent out. I think 7yrs or 70K miles, check it out. I have not received the letter. And the forum search will give you the fix and the cost.

Rick; I sent your question to my sister who work in the Instrument group at Chevrolet. This is her reply to me just now; >>Sounds like a stepper motor issue in the cluster but I will ask the Release engineer who owns that part and get back with you.<<

As soon as I hear, I will post again. Are you up to repairing/replacing the part yourself if I can get one?

I also belong to the Dieselplace forum and agree with the stepper motor diagnoses.
Stripit thanks for the offer. I have ordered 8 of the motors online and will replace all 7 in my gages cluster as I don't want my oil, temp, or fuel gages giving false readings. 1 will be my backup.

I have over 120K on the truck so it would not be covered by the recall but the fact that GM has the recall helps in the proper diagnoses.

I'm using my GPS for the speedometers now so I'll wait till I'm settled in Yuma before tackling the job.

Thanks all for the reply. Seems that if it can happen it will happen to me!

Update

I ordered the step motors online for a total coast of $79. Today I replaced all 7 in the dash cluster in under 2 hours.
Been putting it off but when the oil gauge started acting up I knew it was time.

I also got a recall letter from GM 3 days ago saying they would fix the problem if less the 7 years old and under 70K. Well at 120K I'm not even close.

I can put my GPS away for now and enjoy my drive to Yuma next week.
