using cruise control during towing

I am wondering what the recommendation is for using cruise while towing on relatively flat terrain. If it is fine to do, will a 5.9TD with an automatic trans. maintain speed without shifting up/down. Or would I need the newer 6.6TD. Or would I be better off with a 6-speed manual wheer I can use either 5th or 6th gear, depending.
What about the Chevy duramax with auto trans. I am not sure that Chevy makes many manual trans, so that question may be irrelevant.
