what is biggest 5th wheel i should buy?

this is the hardest forum I have ever tried to get onto. I don't want to babysit your grand kids. Ridiculous! Me and wife want to fulltime. Want to go to national campgrounds and state campgrounds. We thought we should go as big as possible but have been reading that some places and roads don't want big rigs. What's up!

A lot of older parks just are not equipped for larger rigs. Years ago was told most parks were set up for 35'.

Rob, can we ask what your tow vehicle will be and is your preference travel trailer or 5th wheel? With that info we could narrow things down.

Although some state and national parks take big rigs, I'd say the break over is about 30 ft. Under you can get in most places. Over it's more like 50/50.
Of course that doesn't apply to private campground. Most of them take bigger trailers.
IMHO, I'd think big with your tow vehicle. Too many people start with a truck not up to the job. Best of Luck

Rob, DW and I have been to probably 70% of the federal parks in the lower 48 and a number in Alaska. Almost without fail we have found plenty of private RV parks very near the actual park. Stick with the 38-40. It is imperative that you keep Momma happy and you'll be happy yourself.

Thanks for that. MOMMA laughed. I think after a while I would have regretted. BTW how long did it take you to get comfortable driving and backing up rig. I hope marriage can survive it. She doesn't want to drive it but she is a **** of a back seat driver.

Yeah, momma has to be happy...
There are several websites that go into FS campgrounds in more detail then what the FS says about them--we towed a 38' Suites for 10 years and got into all the FS CGs that we were interested in. Now have a 40' Suites and been in several without serious trouble. Just have to look UP, watch the INSIDE on the turns, go slow and things should be ok.

We pulled at 44’ Suites with F350 dually for about 20,000 miles over a 3 year period. Very comfortable when camping, fine when pulling on interstates, a bit nervous when parking. We were excluded from many parks but always found a site. We enjoyed the Suites quality and appreciated it more over time.

We are in a Dutch Star now due to the quality ride over the stiff dually ride.

You’ve gotten plenty of good information. Checking with the parks webpage can tell you the max. rig length and if traveling on some road is Ill-advised due to its length. Parks are making some progress for longer RVs but slowly. Long high rigs can be difficult to get into sites if too tall (trees mostly) and due to short sites. We’ve passed on many places with our 12’ x 39’ fiver. Doing research on the park you’ll be visiting is extremely helpful tho’ sometime frustrating. Not all parks offer 50A service so that may present a problem with newer rigs.

Now there’s one thing I personally think needs to be done. You really need to get your wife to drive the rig. Should, God forbid, you not be able to drive she needs the training and practice to have sufficient skill to drive if necessary.

We just upgraded from a 24rk Trail Runner TT to a Cedar Creek Silverback 33ik. Pulling with a Chevy 2500 Duramax. Love the 33ik, perfect for the wife and the cat and dog. Easy to pull and park so far. Had it 4 weeks.
