Toilet doesn't seal

My 15 year old, but new to me RV has a Dometic toilet where the flap doesn't seal and will not hold any water in the tank. The leads to any poo landing on the flap and 'staining' it until/unless it's manually cleaned with a brush. It also leads to the smell of the tank escaping and my RV stinks whenever I enter it.



Not a tenable solution.


Is it worth trying to fix the seal somehow, or should I find a new toilet which I assume are better designed than they were 15 years ago?


Any suggestions on an affordable, good toilet to consider replacing with?

Take toilet apart, clean up ball and replace seal and gasket.

Justin, what Walt said^^^^. Look on YouTube.com and there will be at least five videos giving you a blow by blow description of how to go about it. And no, the toilets are not much better now than then.

I've decided to just replace the toilet with a Dometic 310, which has a porcelain bowl and which allows me to fill the tank separately from flushing.


Cleaning someone else's poo off the current toilet, which sits too low anyway just doesn't appeal to me.

Make it a habit to regularly clean below the ball valve with some sort of brush that fits thru the opening, using lots of water and disinfectant. Also, keep the groove in the sealing rubber clean with the tool provided.
Regular care will prevent most problems after getting the new unit.

kind of makes me want to just install a real toilet instead. scrubbing poop regularly is not one of my life's goals.

A real toilet is a possibility, with 2 potential downsides--gotta completely drain the bowl in winterizing to prevent freezing, and the amount of water that is used in every flush.
But, if always using full hookups, amount of water used isn't a problem.

Well, I probably should have just bought a real toilet. The Dometic 810 porcelain bowl toilet I did buy appears to be exactly the same toilet I already have installed with with a nicer seat.



I was really hoping the new one would be a better unit that wouldn't lose the seal, but alas, it seems I paid $170 and the time it will take to install for just a new seal and seat.

It should work just fine with minimum maintainance.
Give it a year and let us know how it worked.
The seal itself is an easily replaced item, just a little icky to do the work. First time it is tedious, but you get the hang of it quickly.
