Kodiak Disc Brakes Maintenance

We had to replace the callipers on our 2014, due to a brake controller issue, apparently there was feed going from the controller, without braking which overheated the callipers. The rims were running hot, so I took it into a hub and axle shop shop for inspection. The piston boots were damaged and the brakes partially seized due to the heat. The rotors were not damaged.

Also installed a new controller, adjusted the brake pedal sensitivity, and readjusted the gain on the controller, less aggressive.

The coach travels 3,000 miles a year, but heavy stop and go traffic and any controller issues may well affect your caliper and pad wear.

Suggest a qualified shop inspect brakes, boots pads and pistons. Im not sure what the kodiak maintenance schedule is but annual now for our unit when it gets a its annual maintenance completed every October. Our dealer has never suggested brake inspection, so I'm going to a brake and hub shop, just in case his rv techs don't have the credentials.

Have you talked to Kodiak about this issue? Believe they are in Fort Worth, TX, and have a reputation for good customer service.

Yes they were contacted by the repair shop. Three yr on manufacturing defects, no warranty, on my issue.

Seems to me that COULD be addressed as a mfg defect--I would suspect your shop was not too persistent in getting help from Kodiak. Why not give them a call yourself with all the details/paperwork--ask about reimbursement. You are under the 3-years, and seems to me I have read of others with same problem and Kodiak was responsive.

Sounds to me like he said it was a brake controller issue, not anything related to Kodiak. That would be the truck or controller manuf. issue.

Agreed not anything related to Kodiak and that was the word given to me. Since I didn't have to absorb the cost of rotors as the brakes are shipped in sets, the rotors were returned, all is fair with me.

I was treated very well, by Kodiak and the the repair shop.

Monitor your hub temps.

Yes all is ok, thanks to a well qualified hub and axle shop who took the time to trouble shoot my concern.. That southern Texas hospitality and service is the best. If you think something is wrong, it probably is.
We also carry extended warranty, and roadside assistance to make our travels a little more worry free.

Every year pull your calipers and lubricate all mating surfaces and slide bolts with silicone grease.

Changing pads also calipers I would highly recommend NAPA's best semi metallic pads. They are mid 80's Buick Century application. Kevin from Kodiak told me to use NAPA's best if I wanted top quality. He said no one wants to pay for the best so he does not stock them.

As an aside the shop rate at the hub shop was half the price as an rv shop. Many rv tech rates are over $100 per hour. I think DRV and Interstate in Indianna have shop rates over $100. Oh well pay to play I suppose. I sure would like to find an rv shop in Indianna that charges less with the same quality of service.

I do my own work. To just lubricate all 4 calipers i can easily have the job done in one hour.

MOR/ryde for any of the work they normally do (including brakes).
Current shop rate is $65 per hour. You won't find better service, quality or customer appreciation.


I would be suspect of rotor condition on any brakes that had issues with sticking calipers.

Thanks for the referral. Even better, that I have the IS system and it is time for an inspection.
As for the rotors being suspect to damage, the shop said that they were ok, a licensed mechanic performed the service on the brakes. I just have to trust their skill and judgement as they have bee in the hub and axle business 20 years trailer hub and axles.

The parts replacement kit from Kodiak came with rotors.
