Many years ago I owned a 1978 Holiday Rambler with a factory installed INVERTED 5TH WHEEL (hitch on trailer; pin in bed). It was great; the strength and hook-up ease of a 5th wheel, but the convenience and clear bed of a retractable gooseneck.
I'm just wondering why you don't see any of these anymore. I use my truck for so much more than pulling; but I've developed some health issues that make it very difficult to install and remove my hitch assembly by myself, and the inverted setup would be the perfect.
I've spent hours on the internet researching the topic, and it seems that only heavy-duty haulers like hay trailers and oilfield trailers use this setup. Any other old-timers remember these, or have any suggestions on retrofit without major mods to the pin box? Do any trailer manufacturers still offer these from the factory?
