Towing Trade Off

Looking to see if anyone is pulling a 10k 5er with a newer ram 3500 with the 6.4 hemi? We were pulling with a 1990 f350 with a 460, but the transmission went out on a recent trip. We are stuck between trading in my Tacoma, which has been insanely reliable, on a newer 1 ton and selling the old Ford, or puting a new transmission in the Ford. Engine health of the Ford is kind of unknown it runs good but leaks and uses oil but is paid off. We have been taking longer and longer trips, and having the transmission go out on this last trip was a huge pain we couldn't find anyone to tow the camper. Just looking for opinions especially if you are pulling with a 6.4. the one we are looking at has 97k miles on it, but for all I'm willing to spend on a truck they all have that mileage or more.

The 3500 RAM/Hemi will do fine. It will suck fuel as I assume you already know. West Coast it will be screaming at you climbing the 6% grades.

The 6.4 hemi will do fine. I have a 2019 2500 with the same engine. Mine is a tradesman and is rated to tow 14,000 lbs. We took a trip from Ohio to Glacier NP in Montana, then Yellowstone NP and the Tetons last year. Pulling a 34’ long fiver, factory dry weigh 8400 lbs. I’m probably right at 10k now with items we’ve added. I averaged 10 mpg and the truck never missed a beat.

Yes. The 10 mpg was pulling the camper. I reset the trip odometer every time we hooked up to tow and tracked it. When I’m not towing i can get 16/17 at 68/70 mph with cruise set. I don’t goose it and usually don’t get in a hurry anywhere I go in the truck and certainly not pulling the camper. Never over 72 when pulling the camper and usually not over 75 when not.

Good luck. Always makes me wonder why a "low mile" vehicle is on the market.

Ryan, glad you finally got a truck that fits your needs. Not all members can appreciate the good luck of others. Just ignore them and their thoughts....both negative.

Rather than tell the guy he should be happy with his buy, you first thing questioned why low mileage vehicle should be for sale. Next thing you question the exhaust brake knowing he didn’t have one. What was gained by dragging down his buy?

You must be a half glass gull type of guy. I said "Good luck. Always makes me wonder why a "low mile" vehicle is on the market."

I wished him good luck with his purchase as I hope it serves him well. Then I said it always makes ME wonder about low mile vehicles and he answered me with. "Well low mile for '12 having 90k on it". So If I had a concern I would have said something. My truck is a 15 with 90k and considered by some with low miles.

In the back of my mind I knew somewhere back then they did not have an exhaust brake. It was a legitimate question. If he told me it did not I would have suggested getting one added as they are a life safety item IMHO.

So maybe keep thinking the worst of you want, I had ZERO negative meaning to my posts.
