Short Box Truck

Does anybody tow a MS with a 3500 short (6 1/2 ft. ) box truck ?
The newer 3500 SRW chevy trucks have a payload rating now of 4125
Good enough for a MS. Also , what kind of hitch do you use ?
Thanks !

How are you going to put that much weight on 2 tires with Load Range E ratings?

Very hesitant on sending this but here is my 2cents. Not going to get into a Peeeeeeeeee match with the weight police. If you already have the 3500 short box give it a try. I have seen many towing DRVs with just a 3/4 ton. So I guess the 1ton 3500 would work just fine. Any slider type hitch would be needed. I have the 3500 but it is long box and Dually works for me.

Forget about the weight part, think about smashing the cab with the corner of the 5er. Slider hitches, not so much.

I didn't mean to reply like I was the weight police, but would truly be concerned about going over the total load rating on the rear tires. The pin weight on my '05 MS is over 4200 lbs, and I am barely under the 9500lb rating on the axle. With 4 tires tho, I am no where near the tire load ratiing. Just thinking about E tires on a 110degree day in Texas...
Also, the 4125 lbs from GM is supposed to be distributed over all 4 tires--the pin of a fiver puts it all on the rear tires--and leaves no room for passengers/gear, if the pin is close to 4000lbs.

Joe ,
The new tires are 265/70/18E the weight rating is 2601 each tire.
That't one of the problems with the truck bed being too high.

I must be missing something? Rear axle empty (with hitch) carries more than 3,000 pounds. Add 4,000 pin weight and it seems the tire limits are exceeded by 1,000 pounds per tire. A custom bed will make it worse.

First, I think the tires will be rated at 3250 each, for the 7500lb axle capacity that GM lists for SRW 3500s. Don't know where the 2601 comes from, but it is wrong.
Friend has a 3500 long box, SRW, and his 18s are 3250lbs.
Even at 3250/tire, the rear tires are going to be badly overloaded with a 4200lb pin weight.

If you are going to haul a trailer like this put a truck under it. Grocery getters are just for that.

Truck

I agree with Slow Six, so that is why I put a Ford F450 under my mobile suites and have not regretted it one minute. It handles the load and more importantly it stops that load. I just can't believe people would even consider trying to use a 3/4 pickup to handle a load like a mobile suites. I think they are asking for lots of trouble. The pin weight alone will kill that truck !!!!
My 2008 Ford F-450 with 19.5 inch tires; 4.88 gears is rated for towing a 25,000+ lb load, handles 6200 lb payload, has 650 pounds of torque and 360 horse power. The 2012- 450's have 800 lbs of torque and 400 hp. This is a beast of a truck. It is always better to have more truck than you need than to wish you had more truck than you have!!!

RonS,
I can't remember exactly the lb capacity of the tires, but they are 19.5 and carry 100psi. Load Range is H and maybe 4200/tire--with 4 of them, that is over 16k rear tire capacity. But the axle rating is 9500 and I am close to that.
I have 112k miles on the truck and in the middle of a 14000 mile Alaska trip--no problems with the truck itself, but having brake controller wiring snafus.

Tires

My 450's tires are 19.5's rated for 3640 each I have 538 gears and my axle is rated at 11000 lbs I'm no where close to that or will I ever be. It's rated to for 26000 total combined weight.

My 350 DRW long bed dually is a great truck but for me it wasn't enough truck. My 450 has been a great truck so far, first V 10 I've ever had but its been by far the best.

As always good camping

rons,
Finally took the time to look at the tires--19.5 Continentals, 2nd set of same tires. The rating is 3970lbs at 110lbs. I got 78500 miles out of the first set.

Joe .
I don't know about your buddys truck but the new 2012 3500 trucks come from the factory with Goodyear wrangler tires rated at 2601 each. That't 5602 total . The payload for the truck is listed at 4125. The RR axel rating is 7050
found on the driver side door.

Happy Trails

boobytrap,
You are correct--I got 7050 and 7500 confused.
BUT, my friend has 18" tires and if the axle rating is 7050, then the tires are rated at 3525 each?
I think the axle rating on GM SRWs is the sum of the tire ratings?

But, I just gotta ask--how do you get an axle rating higher than the tire load rating? Or am I reading this wrong also?
Joe

The axle rating would also be taking in items such as spring capacity as well as the capacity of the actual axle, lugs and bearings. It's more than just the tires there.

Mike,
You are correct, but I am of the opinion the tires are usually the weakest link in the rear suspension, as far as pushing the limits. And, as I said, GM seems to rate the rear axles on SRWs at the tire limit, no matter what the axle/components could bear.
