JX450 Pin Weight

We just made a deposit on a 2021 JX450. A little apprehensive about the pin weight. I talked to DRV and they claim the unloaded pin weight is 4,400 pounds. Seems a bit heavy. That said, a 1,250 pound Trike in the garage will go a long way toward unloading the pin. I doubt that I put an equal amount in the front. However, I don't want to have to rely on putting my Trike in the garage every time I tow the trailer.

Does anyone have any real world weights to share? Rear axel weights are not very helpful. Need the actual pin weight.

I currently have a GMC 3500 HD DRW Denali with a payload capacity of 5,296. However, about 800 pounds of that is eaten up with a 60 gallon fuel tank, passenger, etc.

No doubt that the truck will haul the trailer with ease. The concern is with the vertical load on the truck.

Thanks for your input.

After years of experience, two toy haulers, and many trips over CAT scales, I can tell you that you will not remove anywhere near 1250 pounds of tongue weight with your trike. Our Roadking and sidecar (1070 pounds) removed about 180 pounds on both of our Raptors. One was 38' and the other 41'. This was on CAT scale numbers. You can't expect anything any better.

That sounds about right. I realize that I don't get the whole weight. Just looking for actuals on a JX450. The layout of this trailer is really against you in a lot of ways. First, it's only a 10' garage, so not a lot of cantilever in the rear. Second, all the storage is up front.

DRV currently has 3 Fullhouse layouts. Two of them come in a dry pin weights around 3,300lbs. Unfortunately for us, the one we want comes in at 4,400 lbs. This starts to tip the scale on class III trucks, so looking to see just how bad reality is. I really don't want to make the leap to a HDT.

Thanks for your input.

I don't have a Toy hauler so I can't comment about transferring the weight off the pin as you load the garage. But I have 41 foot DRV with Generator and double of set batteries that weights around 20,000# but always weights in with 5,000# on the pin. That is 25% and it seems DRV all run 20-25% on the pin.

I didn't expect that much weigh in the pin when I ordered mine. I had a F350 Dually. That combination didn't like like going down hill into curves so started looking for a used Class 4 or 5. My wife has been happy with the Class 5 every since a fellow in an older Class A pulling a car ran a STOP sign pulling in front of me and I had no where to go. No crash but clean underwear needed in about 3 vehicles.
I looked up Townsend TN and I would consider a heavier vehicle. Are dealing with RV's for Less? Good people and I bought from them. Are they picking up there own RV's at the factory? If so what are they using now.

"F" the payload capacity, simply use your RAWR. You will be fine.

With an average of 4500 pounds of pin weight (non toy hauler) I was over the ratings with my 2011 F-350

Haven't weighed the 2020 450 with the trailer yet. But a truck only CAT scale weigh has the truck about 600 pounds less than the 350.

Our last trailer was a 2 axle toy hauler. I have a pin weight scale and used that to try out different loads in the garage. From no garage extras to one electric glide only to the bike and golf cart, each about 900 pounds.

Pin weight on average was reduced about 25 percent with each addition. E.g. about 200 pounds off the pin with each 900 pound addition.

Thanks. Unfortunately the F450 actually has less payload than a F350 with the same 14,000 GVWR. What the F450 does have, is the best turning radius out there along with the best power in its class.

The drv 3 axle units have less % pin weight. My 45' Santa Fe grosses out with a F-350 at 32300 lbs. Pin weight is 3,900 lbs Trailer loaded to go is 23740. The F-350 pulls it, handles it and stops it with NO effort.

Generally true. However, according to DRV, the JX450 is an anomaly when it comes to pin weight. The guy I talked with was shocked, so he looked up 10 trailers and the average was 4,400 lbs. Most of the other large 5th wheels came in around 3,300 lbs.

Looking at floor plans for DRV JX450 you could estimate the distance for the lever arm from the center axle of the rig, using it as a pivot point, to the center of the garage as about 1/3 of the lever arm distance to the pin. That would mean that 3 pounds added to the center of the garage would reduce the pin weight by only one pound. Your 1250 pound Trike would reduce the pin weight by about 455 pounds. This is only a rough estimate because I do not know the exact measurements. As you said, it is not a good idea to always count on that loading for every trip.

Thanks, however I believe the fulcrum is forward of the wheels on these. If it were at the middle axel, it would sit level without the front jacks down. Your point is valid though. And as we both agree, don't count on the loading. I went with a 2022 Ram 5500 Limited with a Luxe Hauler Body. It has a payload of 10,870 lbs. The hauler body is about 1,500 so I could put all the weight on the nose of the trailer and I'd be ok.

We bought our JX450 last November and love it so far. We have no problems towing it with our 2020 F350 Dually. We carry 2 bikes (Honda Fury and Indian Scout) with a combined weight of approx 1250 lbs.

We weighed the rig before we left for our summer trip with the following results from the CAT scale:

.............................................Witho ut JX450.............With JX450
Truck
...Front Total (GAWR = 5990)..........5100..........................5120
...Rear Total (GAWR = 9900)...........4180..........................8700
...GVW (GVWR = 14000).................9280....................... .13820

JX450
...Pin Weight............................................ ......................4520
...Axles.......................................... ..............................19120
...GVW (GVWR = 24,000)........................................... ....23640

Thank you. This is what I’ve been looking for. Facts.

Looks like your pin weight is 4,520 lbs, which is about right if DRV says the dry weight is 4,400 lbs.

Got to hand it to Ford, that light bed makes all the difference. Our GMC 3500 Denali comes in at a hefty 9,700 lbs without the trailer. Some of that is an aftermarket 60 gal fuel tank and a tool box. Give this, the 4,5020 would put me over 14,000. Funny, the rear axel could take it (10,500).

I’m sure I could pull it, just don’t want to be in a situation where I’m over loaded.

I already ordered a Ram 5500, so that ship has sailed.

Thanks for sharing your weights and happy travels. Can’t wait for our JX450. They’re talking Feb 2022 now.

Should have mentioned that we removed the generator that comes with the JX450. We full timed for 5 yrs in a Momentum 380 before we bought the JX450 and never once used the generator so we decided to save the weight.

I use that space for tools and other storage but I'm sure that this stuff weighs less than the generator did so that would shift our weight a little backwards vs the stock set up.

Bryon, how 'de-tuned' is the Cummins in the 5500? Are they still using the 800-360?

"Give this, the 4,5020 would put me over 14,000"

Forget the 14k GVWR as it's there to keep the truck in the class 3 no different than the F-450. Look a the RAWR that's SAE rated and is all that matters. My pin is 6k and I am at my 9,750# putting me at 15k on my 6 tires. I have proper tonnage so I am 100% legal and the truck handles the weight great!

Simple fact is the RAM 3500 DRW will handle any DRV out there. Your 5500 will be a rough riding MoFo unless you change out to a air ride.

14k is there to keep the truck out of Commercial classification and licensing higher fees plain and simple.
