Slide rollers

Have just finished replacing the rollers on the door-side slide in our '05
TK3. Thanks to Dave (rverdlm) for the guidance to convince me I could do it. Turned out not to be such a hard job--it is strictly mechanical, and once I got the belly cover out of the way, wasn't too hard. Space to work in is hard to come by, and had to open enough area to get my arms up in the frame area to get leverage. All I have left to do is repair/replace the belly cover, which is probably going to be harder than the rollers.

As we returned home from 2 months in Colo and Utah, the slide would not go all the way out and some pretty bad noises were coming from the slide gears. Turns out, the bushings on the mounting flanges, along with the bushings in the roller wheels, were shot on both front and rear roller units.

Got the replacements from Lippert (easily found online) at $120 each--I opted for the heavy duty ones. While waiting for them to arrive, checked at Bennetts in Granbury and found one regular-duty unit for $35.00, which I bought and installed before the Lippert units arrived. It looked identical to the HD units except for a different plating color. Seems to be moving in/out ok now, but somewhat noisier. Looking at the condition of the old ones, very surprised they were still moving at all--bushings were gone and shaft was riding on the flanges and wallowing it out. Soon as the hole grew big enough for the drive gear to drop, the slide would not go out all the way and just racheted in one spot.

I have some pictures that I will send by email to anyone interested--just PM me and I'll send them.

I don't know how often this repair is needed on MS units, but the slides weren't used hardly at all for the 2 years before I bought it, so they actually have only 5 seasons of normal use.

Side note--the insulation looks dry and mostly clean that I can see, but there is room for double what DRV had put in.

Please post the pix here. It will then be available for any who want them, and you'll only have to do it once. I definitely want to see them. I may need to replace the ones on the kitchen side as it is riding lower in motion in and out.

I think you are limited to only 3 per post. When I posted pix I set them to a fairly low definition. They still came out nice and clear but were about 55k each. I set them to 640 by 800 pixels or so. Yours are right in the ball park for file size at 60k so it has to be the limit on number of pix per post.

Tried in second post, same results. Tried in new thread, same results. Will try again when I get cooled down from being frustrated.

Picture Sizes and resolution

Type: JPEG or GIF work best
Size; 8" x 10" or smaller

DPI: Dots Per Inch

DPI: 72 is the highest resolution you can see on a computer monitor
sometimes called (pixels per inch)

a photo that is 5" X 7" at 300 DPI has 5 X 7 X 300 = 10500 pixels about 2 MB

a photo that is 5" X 7" at 72 DPI has 5 X 7 X 72 = 2520 pixels about 275 KB - (1/8 the size)

a photo that is 5" X 7" at 72 DPI is about 375 pixels X 500 pixels

most photo programs will allow you to reduce the resolution

Hope this helps when posting pictures here or else where

I'll look through the program "stuff" to find out maximum sises and quantity - I'll post when I find it.

Thanks, but usually problems like this are traced to operator error, not software.

Door slide

Our door slide kept stripping a gear pack.
Took it to DRV in Howe and a few other RV dealers to get fixed.
It would work for only a few times then break.
DRV was good about furnishing parts.
Finally looked at it more closely and fixed it ourselves.
The holes on the drive shaft had become egg shaped.
Cut it off, drilled new holes, now the slide tracks straight again.
Hope this helps anyone who may have this problem.

Are you referring to the square tube and shear pin holes?

Saw the pics from the picasa link, thanks Gemstone!

Wow that looks like it is a nice elegant and inadequate load bearing device there. What was the first indication of trouble for you, the slide stopping short?

Yup. You did the replacement. I was wondering what the first symptoms are so I can look for them and do the job before the slide jams up.

I am going to have to replace the kitchen side center load bearing angle aluminum in the pocket door very soon. The aluminum has bent away from the wall again and will soon lock up the slide. It allows the center partition to contact the floor when it does. I'm a bit swamped with other projects related to the new toad right now so may not get to it this month. We aren't moving for a while so no problem.

Mike,
For some time, when putting out the door slide, there was always a loud pop, which came from the upper front corner. There is a plastic 'guide' piece that was hanging up on the trailer frame. I am making an assumption this resistance to starting movement might have contributed to roller failure. I would spray silicone on the plastic and make it better for awhile, but it always came back. Or, maybe just wear and tear of lots of in/out use.
At any rate, the slide when reaching near the end of travel going out, began making a racheting noise, but still went all the way. Finally, after getting home from 2 months travel (lots of slide use) the slide stopped as shown in the pics.
What is the problem, is the bronze bushings in the mounting flanges has worn to the point of non-existing--gone completely on one side of each roller. Dave (rverdlm) walked me thru the repair process and I jumped in on fixing it since there are very few moving parts. When the bushings are gone, there is a lot of play in the slide movement--when the slide is far enough out, the teeth on the rack no longer mesh with the pinion gear on the roller assembly--thus the racheting noise as the teeth jump and finally movement stops.

Summing it up--I did not consider the racheting noise a problem until the slide quit moving. Had I not gotten home, would have been a REAL BIG DEAL to get it fixed.

Any other question you have, will try to help.

Joe

Thanks for the info. I have been hearing a ratcheting noise ever since we got the rig in 05. I had figured it was simply the release pawl on the ratchet dragging on the gear like when you turn a ratchet wrench back from the force direction. Now I figure I had better take a look under the slide and check the condition of the bearing assembly.

Was that gear assembly on one side only or is there one on the other side of the slide as well?

On a side note for the admin.

Can you help out getting the pix on the site here? Once the original pix are deleted from the picasa link they won't be available. In this case those are very valuable help in getting this kind of thing fixed. It would be great to be able to do a search here and see them again at a later time.
