Insurance premiums

I guess I could answer this question by making a number of calls and waiting on hold. So this will probably be quicker.

I have heard that some insurance companies will not cover a Medium Duty truck because it is considered a Commercial vehicle. I have also heard that the ones that do charge a very high premium.

Are these true?

Mike

I have heard that USAA will not insure a MDT or even a Ford 450.

Insurance premiums

Check with AON (formerly RV Alliance). They brokerage companies like Progressive, which we have both our MDT and 5th wheel with. I imagine the premium would depend on which state you are in.

Give Explorer RV Insurance who writes insurance for National Interstate at 888-774-6778. Good people, good rates.

I think the reason some insurance companies charge more or do not offer the insurance is due to that they do not have the flexibility in their system.
When I bought my Freightliner I got a price from my existing insurance company. They said the Freightliner is a commercial truck. I told them, it would not be commercial truck. Their words were, when we put in that model into our computer the computer says it is a commercial truck!
I went with RV Alliance and my truck is insured as a heavy duty tow vehicle. The rate is less than ½ of what I used to pay for my 1-ton pickup!
While I pay more for my license plate fees each year, I save over $600 a year on insurance on my HDT.

Just paid my insurance for my 4500 Kodiak. Paid $189 for 6 months. It took my agent 3 days to get it thru the main office. She said I shouldn't have to pay commercial rates if you are just using it for pleasure. John

We been with Explorer since 2003, when our insuranc co. at that time started closeing out thier rv bussiness. Explorer took mh 5er but not my 1 ton TV, in 2004 we bought a MDT which is what Explorer will insure and also HDT.
My yearly rate is less on the MDT than the 1 ton, and when we added the MDT our 5er insurance went down $100.

Check with Farm and City. They are brokers and have contacts throughout the industry. They do know RV's and also work with HDT's as well as MDT's. 800-331-1520. I called them when we first started out and had coverage in under 20 minutes. Good folks to deal with and the coverage for the HDT and trailer was less than what I was spending for a F350 alone.
