Air ride hitch

My MS has the air ride hitch. Just how smooth should this be? When on smooth pavement it's smooth but any hitch would be on this type of road. It beats us up rather good on normal highway. Lot of jerking. MS also has air suspension on springs. I've never pulled anything this heavy except our MS.

The air Ride Hitch should be very smooth.

What kind of pressure are you running?

Glenn ours tows the same way. I found that if you carry 70 to 75 psi in the airshocks it helps.

Are you talking about the air Safe hitch by Air Hitch Technology?

If so I run 90 lbs in mine.

It has 2 arrows on it and says to air up to that point. It's what I do. Have not checked air pressure. It's a trail air hitch. Also I run 70 lbs in rv suspension springs. I know if this is normal, I'd not pull one without it. I pulled from Baton Rogue, La to Houston, TX and was very glad to get it unhooked. There is some rather rough highway on that trip though. It's a TrailAire tri glide5th wheel pin box. Just looked it up on the net.

Ours rides very good.
One morning the DV left her rings on the nightstand next to the bed in the front of the suite. After traveling all morning, they were still there on the stand when we stopped and looked for them at lunch time.
I was impressed!

There are so many things that effect the ride that it's almost impossible to know what will help, but here are a few things; First off how much air are you running in your rear truck tires? Weigh the rear of the truck loaded and go to a tire chart and air them up accordingly. Same with the trucks front axle. Does your trailer run level? I always found it best if the front of the trailer was about an inch higher than the rear. The other things like the hitch and suspension you seem to have a handle on. The one other variable is you. no one can know what your personal comfort level is. What I would find exceptable, you might find terrible. All that being said some roads are just plain going to be horrible for your partcular setup. That is because of the truck wheel base plus the distance of the truck axle to trailer axle spacing. This can cause your setup to get in a resenance on certain concrete highways. Then all you can do is slow down until its more comfortable.

The TrailAir TriGlide pin box has only been available recently. If your unit has the pin box delivered from the factory, it is probably the TrailAir with vertical air suspension only. Upgrading to the TriGlide should help a lot.
The vertical air is really good in reducing bumps from being transmitted from the truck read axle to the trailer, but doesn't do much for the ride in the truck.

I removed the TrailAir pin box and installed a Demco GlideRide. Then installed an Air Safe air hitch in the truck. I finally have a decent riding combination.

My ms is basically level when pulling. I run 80 psi in all my truck tires. That's the max psi on them. 110 in Goodyear tires on MS.. I guess I was just expecting better with the Trail Aire pin box.

trail air

The only thing that will smooth out I-10 in LA is a Hovercraft.

I-10 in Louisiana is pretty good now. It is no longer the kidney beating roller coaster it used to be 5 years ago. I have found worse interstates farther north in places like Arkansas and Oklahoma. We travel into the middle of Louisiana at least once every year to see the grand kids. The secondary roads, like 90 south of I-10 are the ones that are still pretty bouncy since they didn't smooth out the concrete edges after they were poured.

I only run 60lbs of air in all tires on my dually. I also have the trailair pin box and have added the tri glide system. I also took off the overload stoppers on the leaf (top) springs and installed firestone air assist bags. I run 40lbs of pressure in the air assit bags when towing. Which puts the front of the trailer a little higher than the back, truck sits level when hooked up. If your trailer is way off from level you may have to adjust trailer by changing to a different hole in your rear shackle. I am now content with the ride while towing or not. My weight on the pin box is 2840lbs. I also changed shocks on the truck but that did not make any difference.

My truck calls for the pressures you are posting but that 's with 215x85 factory tires, but also with extra load 80psi. I'm running 235x85 tires and states on tire max air 80 psi. Haven't ran it long enough to determine tire wear. Also I don't have air bags but my rv sits level when hooked up. Truck sits level also. Rides rather high empty. Haven't weighed it yet. Seems every time I'm pulling is late at night or I'm in a hurry to get to job. I do believe my truck would ride better at 60 but I'm concerned about heating up the tires.

As I said weigh the truck loaded and air the tires to the correct level for that load from a tire chart. Your ride will improve dramatically. Go here and you'll see what I mean http://www.goodyear.com/rv/pdf/rv_inflation.pdf
It shows that at 50psi you're still rated at over 8000# for your rear axle and I doubt you're that heavy.

wingnut60 - I do have washer and dryer, and two Honda 2000i inverters, but they ride in tool box in bed of truck. I only carry about 1/3 tank of fresh water. And have 110 lbs air in the 17.5 goodyear tires. I also have sleep number bed, which is a little lighter, but then the storge area under bed is ull, so maybe back to normal weight. My cargo bays are quite full. My tires are wearing even and have been rotated every other oil change so thats 10K, they have about 40k on them, and still looking good. Yes I-10 in LA is bad news, when stopping we open doors real slow.

The pin weight of our 36TK3 is 4380 for a total weight on the rear axle of the truck of 7940 as weighed. Michelin recommends 50 psi for LT235/85R16E to carry 8024 with duals.

The trailer axles are 13380 pounds or 3345 per tire. According to Goodyear 90 psi is recommended for 3695 pounds with H tires.

I run 10 psi over the recommendations to help reduce tire temp but much more and ride really suffers.

The better way, I believe, to reduce tire temperature is to use nitrogen instead of air in all of the tires.

we just started to have it available here at home and I did all of our tires including the RV.

$9.95 a tire with free fill ups. If you have to use normal air then they have to purge the tire again.

I've serviced aircraft tires with nitrogen for years and never considered using it in my truck tires. Maybe I need to consider it?

We use it in aircraft because it is dry and inert. No moisture to freeze at 41,000 feet and in case of hot brakes, it won't burn. A side benefit is natural rubber tires maintain pressure a little better with nitrogen. Automotive tires are not made of natural rubber so maintaining pressure is not much improved.

Nitrogen will have no different effect on tire temperature as long as you fill the tire to recommended pressure with it or compressed air. There is no magic cooling effect of that gas which is already 2/3 of the regular atmosphere anyhow. The only advantage to it is that it is supplied as a dry gas if you do not have access to dry compressed air. In my rig I do have a drier so I get that from it to fill my tires.

Even if you fill up with "wet" compressed air the inside of your tires will still be in far far better shape than the outside sidewalls that are exposed to sunlight and ozone.
