It is my understanding that a water softener does not make the water taste "salty". The water is not softened by adding salt to it. The water is softened by a type of filteration that collects the mineral compounds (hardness) from the water. The salt is used to simply "flush" the the minerals from the filtering material, so that the "hardness" can continue to be collected.

I have had a little experience with water softeners in two 6-bay self-serve car washes. With proper "flushing" of the softener, the washing water was soft, but not salty.

One can find much more detailed info on how water softeners work in numerous web sites on the net.

FWIW!

thank you that helped a little...more info than i ever had on water softeners and used them for 30 years in the stick house....but they do make cloudy ice cubes....but if it's not salty then I guess it's okay with me...i just won't put them in water.

Keep in mind that a water softener won't make bad (contaminated) water safe to drink.

well i finally figured out that the water from the tank is not filtered...there is a residue in the bottom of the glass when using ice cubes made from tank water. didn't drink the water because it came from hose with filter that does not kill bacteria. Usually put bleach in the water but not today. Believe me we are very careful with the water. bleach is now in the tank again. chlorination seems to work well and we use bottled water for everything that we cook with or drink or brush our teeth with.
