Fun on the road
When it came time to head back to OK from south Texas we planed to make short stops at Fredericksburg and then to Lake Texoma for a short fishing trip. 85 miles south of San Antonio the left front tire threw it's tread. Good Sam sent someone out to fix it for us and then on to Fredericksburg. Got the tire replace at the GoodYear dealer in Fredericksburg and then on to Lake Texoma. Fishing was great there and then one to home. 5 miles out of Madill OK the left rear tire threw it's tread. Went on home on the spare sweating all the way because the spare is 7 years old. The tires that went were replaced in 07 after two of them tore up the back of the coach. Replace all four of them then. Fun on the road with G614's. I believe it is my last trip with them. The first one that went didn't get the sewer line (lucky).

Hey Chevman, don't you run semi-truck tires on an Alpenheavy?

nope just the G 159's that came on it in 2001 and 2 sets of G-614's. Never had a tire problem yet. 5 years and new tires are bought. 5 years and the tires look great.

Anyone running Goodyear tires long enough will undoubtedly have this problem.

So my BIL found out this last week--shelled a tread on one of his 6-year-old 614s. Since he bought the trailer and his 3500 about the same time, he got to thinking about the truck...$2800 later, new G614s??? and new Wranglers on the dually.

Chevman, the tires were dated 1707 and 2807. And I always keep them at 110.

thanks for the information. 5 years old. This just means I feel good about buying new tires at 5 years and will not care how great they look when replacing them.

A good alternative although expensive is to get the 17.5" wheels and put on the Michelin XTA. They are a load range J.

If you will by pass the Goodyear dealer. (They are trying to sell tires), Call Goodyear Damage Claim in Akron, Ohio. 800-322-4682. State your claims and they have the Authority to authorize free to you 5 new tires, pay for repairs to your rig and pay for motel if you can't stay in your rig during repair.
If you play your cards right, here's the deal. If you have one tire go bad you can get one tire. If you have two tires go bad you can get Five at NO CHARGE. I have seen this happen time and time again.
Good Luck
I got mine

Slow Six, Is the profile of the Michelin XTA small enough not to create problems??

Okie,
The 17.5" XTAs are narrower by maybe 1"--and the height is within 1/4" of the 16" G614s. They are a super replacement for the 16s. Absolutely NO clearance problem.
I made this changeout 5+ years ago and have not had a flat/blowout, and add air only once a year.
Got the wheels/tires from www.trailertiresandwheels.com in Edon, OH. They will ship wheel/tire anywhere already mounted and balanced.
If you need a tire upgrade, this is a no-brainer. However, some people worry about the 62mph limit Michelin says not to exceed--I haven't adhered to that when needed, but I usually run 60-65. I don't worry even when I find myself above 70 when conditions permit.

Joe, I looked at that site and am trying to get the right wheel for this '05. I tried to measure the lug nuts and thought I got 5/8's inch, yet I don't see an eight lug wheel with 5/8's inch. Did I measure wrong? Or did I not see the correct wheel? Thanks for your help.

The lugs are 9/16"--at least mine are. If you order from them, Scott will keep you straight on what you need. The 17.5" wheel featured on the website has been a good one for me--no corrosion or rust.

Our '07 has 5/8" wheel studs. It was ordered with 8K axles and 17.5 inch wheels.

The 17.5 wheels come with the 5/8" lugs; the 16" wheels come with the 9/16" lugs. The wheels I am talking about are compatible with the 17.5" tires at 120psi and the smaller lugs. TrailerTiresandWheels sells the same wheel with different lug openings. The trailer (like mine) will still have the 7k axles and brakes, just higher capacity tires. The wheels also come with the correct lug nuts.
