12v system only works when plugged in?

I know there was a thread on this someplace but I can't find it? Today I pulled all the batteries to do maintenance and pulled the breaker box to replace a bad GFI breaker that went bad. Now I don't have any 12v lights etc unless I'm plugged in. I do have power to the jacks and slides. I checked the breaker (fuse?) by the batteries and it seemed OK. I might have screwed something up when I pulled the breaker box because its a REALLY tight fit. I checked each battery and the inteli-power charger and they are fine. Other then that I'm stumped.

The odds are that your 'reverse polarity' fuses are blown from the battery cables being inadvertently touching the wrong post. It can happen to the best of us, and it happens so fast that you don't know it even happened. They are usually located in your power center. Keep us informed...

Thanks Jim, I'm going to take a look today. To be honest I don't know what I'm looking for, never heard of reverse polarity fuses. I'll post back later today.

OK, I'm an idiot! I don't know how it happened but the battery shut off switch was pushed in. The only reason I'm posting this is so maybe someone else will learn by my mistake.

I also want to add that my 08 doesn't have reverse polarity fuses that I could find. The only fuse I saw was the one by the battery but it checked out. Again, thanks

I'm surprised that yours doesn't have one/two. This is what it should look like on a typical unit:
And thanks for the update, we've all done things like that!

Jim, I have a row of horizontal breakers and a vertical row of 12v fuses. I don't have the two separate fuses shown. I even pulled the cover off to see if they were hiding them lol.

That's good advise from your friend. I just never thought of the shut off switch because I never use it. At home here I'm parked by the house plugged in and on the road I'm usually plugged in or using my generator.

PS, my new pads will be here tomorrow.

My new to me Harley would not start. The "Friend" walked by and said "did you check the battery connections". I replied the previous owner had put in a new battery recently. YEP connections were loose!

Do you have a Progressive Dynamics battery charger aka converter?
The PD converters have 3 fuses to protect from reverse polarity.

Other brands such as Iota have them as well.
The converters have changed over the years (acquisitions, product changes etc)

Look at this manual for the PD 9100 charger, last page specifically.

Thanks and yes, I checked those three fuses and they were all good. Even checked with a multimeter to make sure.
