Slide question

Okay, we were set to pull out from Deming, NM this morning when all of a sudden the dining room slide would not come in.....just made some whirring noises. Debbie put in the kitchen/entertainment slide just fine and then tried the dining slide once again, and it came in as expected. When we got to the Van Horn KOA for the night, Debbie put all three slides out and then tried to get the dining slide to come back in, it would not. However, if putting in the kitchen/ent slide first, it would come in just fine.

I'm in a quandry. We have always put out the bedroom slide, then the kitchen slide, and then the dining slide in that order. When putting them back in, we have always done the reverse; the dining, the kitchen, and then the bedroom. For 2.5 years we've not had a problem.

I looked at the hydraulic fluid reservoir and there is about an inch of fluid in it. Is that enough? Does there need to be more? What type of fluid does it take? Where would I get it?

So many questions.......

Joe

Joe, The res should be about an inch from the top when all slides are in (unless the BR slide is like ours, then the BR has to be out.) All Jacks up. Have a look under the bed to see when the BR slide act is retracted, in or out. They changed it at some point. ATF fluid like Dextron (any number is fine)

When Jacks are up and sides out, the res should maybe have more than an inch. Like 2"....but always fill when jacks up and slide act retracted.

It may be low, or have air in it. Maybe exercising the jacks and slides will fix it.

Joe,

I think you have the correct sequence of going in or out with the slides. We've got a 2010 with side bathroom and follow the same sequence, at least from what I remember. The one other thing we were told is that for our coach, we are to run the bedroom slide, whether in or out, all the way without stopping. According to what we were told, stopping midway with the bedroom slide can mess up the flow diverter that works to supply hydraulic fluid to both rams of the bedroom slide.

I think you are OK with the level of the fluid. As far as the fluid is concerned, I'm thinking that if you want a bunch of reading, you can check this thread over on SOITC:

http://www.suitesowners.com/forums/s...=hydraulic+oil

They are saying that about any ATF is OK, according to Lippert.

We went to the Van Horn NAPA Auto Parts store and came back with 4 quarts of AT fluid. I poured 3 of them in and Debbie went in to try the slide. Hallelujah , it worked like it was supposed to. We are back in business!

Thanks for the help!

Joe, good to hear you found it was a fluid level issue. You might want to check all you connections and see if any are leaking. We have had our unit for 7 years and only had to add fluid between changes when we either had a leaking connection or once blew a line (whole other story).

Here is the final result after adding three quarts of fluid......

Okay, got up this morning and opened the door to the reservoir/battery compartment. While looking at the reservoir, I had Debbie raise the 4 rear jacks. The reservoir filled to near the opening. I ran and got a trash bag and encircled the end of the reservoir with the opening and then had Debbie start bringing in the two hydraulic slides. After that I raised the trailer to get it on the truck and then retracted the front legs for travel. After all that, I pulled out the trash bag and there was probably about a quart of fluid inside. The reservoir is still full, but I was glad we were able to travel will almost no delays today. I will be picking up a turkey baster either tonight in Merkel or tomorrow in Grand Prairie so that I can remove about an inch or so of extra fluid. I put a bunch of paper towels on top of the reservoir while we were traveling and when I checked them upon stopping, there was very little that had made it out of the reservoir during travel today. Turns out that I only needed to add one quart of fluid, not three.

I am once again a happy camper! Thanks to the friends on this forum and their willingness to share their knowledge, a pricey mobile serviceman call was avoided. I learned some more stuff about my rig in the process too.

Thanks again,

Joe

Joe,
You have yet to account for where the fluid went? Need to find/fix it or I would expect it to happen again.
And looking for a turkey baster in Merkel??? You are optimistic...I think there are only turkeys in Merkel.

Joe,

You are correct about not finding a turkey baster in Merkel. No such luck. We are now set up at Trader's Village in Grand Prairie for the next two weeks. I hear a TB calling my name from many stores here. ha.

I am going to start going around checking every fitting I can find after we get set up for the summer in Iowa. That should start the last week in April.
