Don't have the level-up system, but I always use a block of wood made of 3 layers of 2x10s screwed/glued together under each landing leg. Downside is the size of the block to carry around...I do think the less the legs are extended, the more solid the setup will be. I use a 12x12 piece of hard plastic (AlturnaMat) for the rear legs to keep them from sinking in to soft ground.
Our unit seems to be pretty solid--I also use BAL chocks on each set of wheels set real tight.

If you are losing hydraulic pressure, there is a leak with one of the check valves I would think.
