New Tires for 2008 F-450 Dually, Need Recommendations.

I have about 53,000 miles on the OEM Continentals that are showing their wear. They probably need to be replaced soon. I pull a 17,000 lbs 5th wheel, MS 36 TK3.

What tires would you recommend?

Have replaced the 19.5s on my 08 F-450 a bunch of times. Used Goodyears once (not recommended) and Continentals twice. Suggest you replace with the same Continentals. Used a Ford dealer in Florida and got them for $268 each including mounting & balance in 2010. Last time at a Ford dealer in Texas they were $308 balancing and mounting extra. (2012)

I have Goodyear Wranglers on mine 68,000 trouble free miles. Good for awhile yet.

golf_bears,
I replaced my original Contis at 78500 with the same tire--now at 100,900 on 2nd set and looking good. Found out I had to run 100psi in fronts to keep the shoulders from wearing (4x4) fast--now just run 100 all around.

netjam,
How many is a 'bunch'? How many miles on the truck? Sounds odd if you see the above for my miles.
Did the Ford dealers do the work themselves, or take the truck somewhere for you? No dealers I have found near FtWorth work on the 19.5s.

A bunch is kind of misleading. Have changed out the front tires 3 times and the rears twice. The fronts wear out the shoulders as you found earlier and towing I always want good tires so I changed them probably before I really needed to. I have 110,000 miles on it now. The Florida dealer in Fort Meyers changed and balanced the tires at their shop and included the cost in the price of the tires. The Texas Ford dealer had to send it out and charged me extra ($60) for 4 balances and mounting. The Goodyears were a "bait & switch" by Purcell Tire in Las Vegas ( ordered Continentals but when I arrived said only Goodyears were available) They always ran hot and eventually it looked like a few belts let go.

When I ran the original tires at 75-80, the fronts rounded badly in 30000 miles--I then put them on the inside duals and ran them for the next 48000 without a problem. Since I began using 100psi in all tires, the front wear is now uniform. I have begun rotating as Ford says to--side to side only. Trying to rotate in any other manner gets real complicated and expensive...

wingnut60,

I have the same outside edge wear you're talking about so thanks for the tip on the 100psi for the front tires. I had been running at about 80 then up it to 85 didn't realize you had to go to 100 to avoid the wear problem.

Maybe I'll try the rotation you did also. The tires could go another 15,000 or so if I can get the fronts to stop wearing down. I'll give it a shot and see what happens. Will get them balanced, rotated (as you did) and the front end alignment checked out.

Again, thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.

You are welcome, hope it works for you. Certainly the increased pressure will aid a little in mileage, but may turn out to be too rough a ride?
I first had the alignment checked, but it was fine--thats when I raised the pressure, wear has been good ever since. I am now at the approximate mileage on the 2nd set of tires that showed the bad wear on the 1st set, and I feel the fronts are in good shape.
The front suspensions on these 450s are massive compared to the 350s, and should last a long time.
One other note--I changed all shocks to Bilsteins at about 40000--the original "Rancho" shocks had no compression/rebound at that point. Was really disappointed with what Ford calls performance shocks...

I have a friend who pulls his TK3 with a Chevrolet 3500 that a dealer in Wisconsin had put on Hankook 19.5's and they now have 53K on them and they show very little visible wear. They are a straight rib and he said the only thing he did not like about them was that they tend to hydroplane in deep water. I sure like the looks of them though.

My 450 now has 49K and I have had the front end checked and aligned 2 times for toe-in as they show wear on the outside rib. I think part of the issue is that the 450 4x4 wheel cut angle is causing the tire to scrubb when cutting sharp which shows up in excessive wear. I also have increased the pressuer to 95 on the front and when towing I run 85 on the back but drop to 55 for daily driving.
