You absolutely do need the check valve. Required by code in every location in the US> Anyone who tells you different is operating with only one oar in the water. Why would you want to risk everyone in every park you go to health. Besides it's easier than all the mickey mouse fittings you would have to buy and install. Just make sure it's piped in correctly and not backward. It won't operate if incorrect.
