Porthole - yes, they should have used space balls (Widget Co.) around the edges. Would have allowed the panel to expand and contract - squashing the resilient balls when expanding. My doors also are glued rigidly, but I have no cracks at joints.
Fine for hardwood, coarse for soft wood.

How are your fames made?
Rail & stile or picture frame?
