This was one reason quick disconnects were developed. Best option would be to buy a new set of stairs that are quick connect.
The hinge steps & quick connect steps have different
mechanisms.

Just because a pedestal receptacle reads 256 volts doesn’t indicate how many amp can be drawn.
If the EMS or breaker is tripping it could be overheating from not enough amp bring able to be drawn...
