I ordered my 2017 38RSS with the whole house inverter controller with a 2800 Magnum and four 6-volt batteries; I added 4 additional 6-volt batteries for a total of 8, and 600 watt solar panels on the roof, I would like to upgrade the inverter to a better, more efficient unit, plug and play. Can someone make a recommendation. For those that done't have a 2800 whole house inverter, mine will be available in a few weeks.

When I ordered my trailer I did so with the Magnum 3000 hybrid. I would think that would be plug and play. Although If you have the older remote I think I would upgrade that as well just for the extra features - functionality.

I don't know about efficiency difference but the main feature is the 3K hybrid can supplement the shore power line voltage if your demand is exceeding supply.

This is something you will see when on 30 or 20 amp service.

Thank you, Port. I would imagine that the remotes are the same as you received yours only a few months after me. I'm not sure that I would want to upgrade to only 200 more watts. I was thinking more on the lines of 4000. I'm a little ignorant on these so I'm having to do a little research and rely on assistance from here.

I have learned that the 4000 requires that batteries be wired for 24 volts. I had already planned on requiring my solar panels for 24 when I add in the other 2. Is there a benefit to having batteries wired to produce 24 volt?

The 2800 to 3000 is more than just a 200 watt upgrade, the 3000 gets you the hybrid supplemental load support feature.

What are you looking to do? Even with the proper battery supply the 4000 is only going to give you about 32 amps AC power, about 10 more than you have now.

Are you planning to boondock?

What panels are you using? What SOLAR controller? I'm using 200 watt panels that put out 21-24 volts/ 9 amps. They are wired for an output of approximately 66 volts at 27 amps x 2

You could wire your current batteries to get 24 volts, but that's gets tedious quickly.

When I did my solar battery change I went with all 12 volt batteries.

I have forgotten all the specifics, port. But I have a 60 amp MPPT controller; four 150 watt solar panels, and eight 6 volt batteries. Most of what we do is boondocking. I plan to add 2 more solar panels before next spring.

Cool. I added 48v 250ah (12kW) of Lithium Ion in the same space as (2) 6v 230ah batteries. Adding the solar next year. Mine works now so that if we are on 50a they batteries just ensure clean power. If on 30a, then the batteries add the extra back up to 50a. If boondocking then the batteries run it all. Anyway, love seeing people upgrading. Yes I built my batteries, put the neighborhood kids to good use. Only vaporized 2 of them, luckily both from large families. ;)

Since I see some knowledgeable people here let me pose a question.

My 1K inverter is not working (display shows 13.5DCV in, 0 ACV out). No error codes. I plugged in my test plug to verify and wiring is ok. I’ve tripped the GFI and reset multiple times. Of course the inverter is outside of the warranty.

It seems I need to replace the inverter. Can I simply replace it with a 2K inverter without changing anything else?

Generally yes, with some caveats. The default systems in RV’s generally are on the low end so you don’t want to exceed the specs unless you have a plan. ;) (This warning is to remind people not to do what I - The Mad scientist - does. Ever. )

Year, model?

If a magnum I’d give the tech support button on the website a shot.

Sorry for not following up on my post; health issues. Anyway, after researching, I discovered that this little swap out would be in the neighborhood of $2000; I had no idea. My 2800 has been working well with no issues for 4 years, so I'll forget about the upgrade for now.

Been crazy weekend. My problem solved. Inverter was good, some dummy neglected to check battery fluid levels. And after some thought I realized the reason for asking about the 2K inverter, even though the 1K would be large enough, it wouldn’t work anyway. So nothing lost.

John, every one of us has pulled some 'bone-headed' move. 20 years of this and my last new battery swap I left the ground cable loose from the inverter. Couldn't figure out why the fridge/freezer wouldn't work. Hmmm...I ran it down one afternoon in a rest area after it irritated me enough. We all live and learn.
