View Full Version : Rear cap preventative fix maybe?

I have read a few articles of the rear cap coming loose on various years and models of Mobile Suites. If I understand it correctly the failure appears at the lower corners of the cap. Now I understand the adding additional backing for the screws makes since.

Here's my thought. Mine appears to be tight and secure. So what if as a preventative measure I add lets say an additional 4 to 6 screws on each corner. I would use a oval head stainless screw with a finish washer to add additional clamping force, probably a #10 1" long spaced in-between the existing screws.

So those that have experienced this failure do you think this would help?

Been there and posted. I re-read the postings again and missed the rear wall secure tip. Makes since I was just trying not to have to remove the bottom skin and insulation.

Well I figured what the heck and jumped in yesterday afternoon and added a couple braces as a preventative fix. I found a couple heavy duty pre-drilled L brackets that fit nicely then drilled and bolted from both the top and bottom. Each bracket is about 18" from center.

For those that haven't had the issue it is possible for the rear interior wall to move back and forth. This flexing could cause your lower ends of the back cap to come loose. Other DRV owners found this and have corrected it by adding bracing between the bottom plate of the rear wall and the cross member on the frame. To access this area you will need to drop the spare tire and remove the plastic tub. Once you see the area to be braced you will see why. The bottom plate of the wall is not supported by anything so adding the braces provides support and should eliminate any side to side movement..

The repair itself wasn't that bad and probably would not of taken more than a few hours if I didn't have to make a few trips to the hardware store and my house for extra tools and supplies. Unfortunately I have to store the unit in a covered storage lot. No room at home.

Common problem, your fix looks good and permanent.

That is exactly the problem I had and DRV would not admit it Or fix in 2016. Told them I would never by another DRV because of Greg in the service department. I trade units every 3 years( had 4 DRVs)
It’s their loss not mine

He was bad saying “no”
But Greg just plain lied
I made trip from southern Illinois to factory, greg promised to remove my rear cap to find out what was going on. Got home an a few weeks later got on roof and looking at caulk saw nothing had been touched. All he wanted to blame that I pulled a small aluminum trailer behind. This was on a 2012 and I had pulled 3 other DRV with no problem same trailer.
So I took a short trip to Missouri without trailer an ripped screws out again.
Called Greg and he told me I was out of warranty and nothing he would do

GTM How many braces did you have to install? Not to try to sound dumb but was the braces the L bracket with 4 bolts?

Yes the L brackets are the braces I installed. Being their size I only used two as they should add enough rigidity. Some have used more but they appeared to be smaller brackets.
