View Full Version : Air Conditioner problem

Need some advice on where to start to troubleshoot this issue. It's 90 degrees in Denver & our living room air conditioner won't come on. The bedroom AC is working. They were both working fine yesterday.
Nothing smells like it's burning.
Wondering if the air conditioner itself is the problem or could it be a problem with the campground electricity?
Is there a way to test if we're actually getting 50 amps at our pole?

Appreciate any advice you can offer regarding this issue!

Thanks

Does the aC sound like it is trying to work? If so it could be the hard start capacitor. Our 07.5 MS had that problem Any RV repair place should have the kit. While up there I would advise looking at how poorly the cover seals. They let in LOTS of hot air. Domestic sells a kit to re seal. I did both units and it made a HUGE difference with cooling.

Just for grins, turn Zone 2 off, and switch over to Zone 1. 1 is the living area, 2 is the bedroom. If it still doesn't work, it isn't the electricity source.
I think each AC is on a different leg of the 50a service--make sure none of the breakers are tripped.
After all this, and still not working, may be a capacitor--maybe time for a mobile tech.

Thanks so much for your suggestions. The living room AC isn't making any noise at all, doesn't sound like it's trying to come on. We shut off the bedroom AC but living room still doesn't do anything. Thinking this is going to require a tech.

As Joe mentioned did you check your breakers?

Yes, breakers are fine

Seriously look at how poorly your covers are sealing. I know getting the unit running is most important. Really made our rig cool MUCH better!

One time one of the neighbors a/c units failed to start. I went up on the roof, removed the cover and gave the fan shaft a turn, it fired right up. That was the only time they had the a/c not start. They never had another issue with it, no idea what casued that no start, but while I was up there and got it going I sprayed a dry lube on the areas i thought could use it. I then went and removed my covers and sprayed the same areas, just in case, but never had any issues with my units.

Thanks Cummins & Stacey!

Does that mean you got it working?

Nope. Tried several things, reset the thermostat, went up on the roof, but still not working. So we're trying to get an RV tech out here.

Check your Dometic thermostat. I still have an issue where the Zone 1 A/C won't come on. The problem has been intermittent and is now constant. Zone 1 misreads the internal temperature and shows anywhere from 38 - 50 degrees as the measured temperature. The thermocoupler has been replaced. Problem reoccurred. The wiring to the thermocoupler was replaced in case there was a staple piercing it. Problem reoccurred. The circuit board in the thermostat was replaced and the problem reoccurred. A new thermostat is on order and hopefully this will repair it.

Wow, AlmostRetired, what a pain with that thermostat! We did the reset procedure on the thermostat but that didn't resolve the problem. An RV repair guy was supposed to be here 25 minutes ago, so I'm hoping he's still going to show up.

Our bedroom AC did this same thing when we went to pick the trailer up. After two days they found that the thermistor that runs from the AC unit to the ceiling sensing unit was not reading the right temp. The outside temp was about 90* and we had the AC units set to 72*. When we would look at the inside temp Zone 2 it would show 55* thus not letting the bedroom AC come on. They pulled a thermistor from another unit, replaced the defective one and the AC fired right up. This is probably not your issue but just another thing to throw out there.

Hunter157, it seems like there are a lot of things that can go wrong with the AC. Fortunately, the tech came out & he got it working again with only the cost of a service call. Since it's going to be in the mid to upper 90's for the next 5 days, I'm so glad to have cool air again!

Inquiring minds want to know. What did he do to make it work???

Stacey,
He did a lot of the things that my husband had done, but when the tech did it, it started working. He checked the power, went up on the roof took the cover off & spent some time checking everything up there, reset the thermostat & it started working again. No replacement parts were needed so it was just the cost of a service call, thankfully.
