This is the first time we have had the occasion to camp in 100 degree temps and our Dometic Refrigerator is having problems maintaining temperatures below 44 degrees. The freezer appears to be operating OK. Is this to be expected? Is there some modification I need to make such as an additional circulation fan on the coils?

I was having same issue. Replaced sensor with a toggle switch. Fans runs continuously until I turn them off. Brought refrigerator down to 34 degrees.

Be sure you don't have an excess buildup of frost on the fins--that usually keeps my fridge temps a little high til I turn the control to low, let it melt, and then all is good.
I also have 2 fans on the cooling unit outside--its a s x s Dometic 12 cu ft.
They are making a lot of noise, prob time to replace them.

I've had the same problems recently. The unit was taken to the shop for this issue and the frig light not working. They found that the insulation had fallen away from the coils, they just re-taped it back into place and all is fine.
Check yours out, it 's found behind the upper inspection cover outside.

Hope that this helps.
