Sliding Closet door latches

Has anyone found a fix for the plastic latches that hold the doors in place. I have replaced mine several times, now wondering if they are really needed?? Any ideas??

I moved (reversed) ours so that they are only used for travel. The doors work normal until we move, then I push the left all the way to the right and latch it open and then push the right all the way to the left until it latches. I filled the old holes and it look like it was built that way.

The great part about this is that you are not having to unlatch each and every time you get in the closet and the doors will close all the way tight to the jamb.

Another way would be to remove the latch and use a "drop rod" in the track for travel to restrict movement, like many have done with patio doors.

Somehow, in our ES, we did not break them, but, in our Avion, we broke both of them (same model latch).

I cut PVC to length and put crutch tips on the PVC ends and stored them in the closet when not moving.

I drilled a hole in each track right by the edge of the door when it is closed. IWhen we get ready to leave, I put a small bolt in the hole (gravity keeps it there) and it stays put real nicely.

We found the clips from Montana of Keystone 5th wheels to be the best, they have a finger release to free the doors, no more broken latches.

Reversing the doors when stationary works great.
But if you keep forgetting to do that, you could remove latches and install a good strip of Velcro; put the sticky part on the wall so you won't catch your knits on it as easily.
