F350 brakes

Lately my brakes have been very spongy and when I first start the truck the brakes go all the way to the floor. It seem that the brakes stop the truck, but they just don't feel right. I took the truck to a mechanic and he said they were fine. He also said bleeding them wouldn't help.

If you are actually experiencing "pedal to floor" then you need to take it to Ford, or a genuine brakes-only repair shop. That sounds dangerous--do you have the ABS on your truck?
Have had several Ford trucks, none had a brake problem.

Funny thing is it only does it first thing after starting. It's like my old Class A had to build up air before the brakes would work.

What year is you 350? Sounds to me there is a very slow leak in the hydroboost system, and bleeds off when not running. I don't know much about the brake systems any more--they are way too complicated in how they operate.

I have had an '02/'04 and '07 Superduty--only brake concern I ever had was getting used to ABS and to stand on the brakes when I needed them and not let off when the pedal pulsed. It sound as tho you could get into serious trouble if you can't figure out the problem. Does it happen every time you first start up? That should be easy to show Ford--and maybe you should try a different dealer.

Took the truck camping this weekend and it seemed to be fine. It seams that it only happened just as I start up after a long period between runs. I'll be checking it after a week to see if this continues.

I am not a Automotive mechanic, HoweverI am a EPA cert HVAC contractor with a Associate degree in Mechanical Electrical Technology.
And I can tell you , There is no systematic analysis that transitions from failure once, then fine.....to hit the road its all gravy!!!!
Any elecrtric or mechanical device period! must be replaced if it ever exhibits symptoms as you describe. regardless if intermittant or only when cold etc, thats just luck! and they dont get better and they dont fix themselves and most assuredly arent working correctly !! which inthe case of brakes! there is no room for errors ! You could kill youself and others very easily! I would consider it manslaughter if you drove thar rig and it killed someone sfter you knew!! that the brakes were clearly defective!!

This would be fine and I would really like to fix the problem. The question is, what to fix? We took the RV out today and it seemed to work OK. I've bent it to a mechanic and they can't fine a problem. Next I think I go to a Ford dealer.

I don't know much about newer brake systems--but I remember having older trucks/cars that might have had low fluid levels in the brake lines and required 'pumping' the brakes to work. Seems to me that you need to understand what make the brakes work and how that can 'lose' pressure when sitting for a long time. You seem to be able to let the truck sit for a long period--have you thought about letting it sit at your mechanics' shop and then trying to duplicate the problem?

A little more detail here. We had some dry weather here, so I pulled off the front wheel. I looked inside and the pads look new. The rotors look new also. No marks, just a polished surface. The fluid level is to the top. No leaks. As soon as I start the truck, I can push the peddle to the floor with medium pressure. The next time the brake will hold and stop, but it seems that I can still push it to the floor. Only option now is to bend over and take it to the Ford dealer. Ouch.

It sounds to me like a vacuum and or a master cylinder problem.

I can only assume that you were not going to bend over backwards for the dealer...

I think you will have to check out your brake fluid oil, problem may arise because of low fluid oil. check the brake pads and replace the same if needed.

I'm fairly sure that you need to replace your master cylinder I think it is probably bypassing internally. I had encountered that same problem several times when I used to repair autos as a side line business.

Master cylinder replacement always seemed to take care of it. I ran a side line auto repair for about 30 years and saw that problem several times on customer cars and and a couple of times with my own vehicles.

I think your brake power booster goes bad, may be you have low brake pedal issue, if it is bad then replace the same. or else may be your brake pads are worn, check the same.
