Shackle bolts

Something to look for. As you can see, the bolt broke at the grease hole, the weak point on the bolt.

WOW! That is one powerful grease gun you have that can blow a bolt into. Seriously, the grease holes are the weak points, but also think about the nuts being overtorqued twisting the bolt into or someone held the air impact on too long at factory or could be to much hardening of the bolts. That just gives me something to look forward to on our MS in the future. Thanks for the information!!!

Does anyone know what the torque should be? I have some popping noises from time to time on both sides of the coach. At first I thought it may be the levelers. I got underneath it this morning and could tell it was coming from the hanger area. I am wondering if the air bladder is loosing pressure and then the springs will pop a little. Either way, after seeing this broken bolt I want to check the torque all the way around.

Getting down and checking the tire pressure the old fashioned way with a gauge gives you an opportunity to look over the suspension system. That's a daily chore for every driving day for me. Lubing it by hand grease gun at least every 6 months helps too.

Just curious. If you didn't find it until Cal., how do you know it broke in Mo?

You know how sometimes a little thing doesn't mean much at the time but later it makes sense? I remembered in Branson it took an extra 2X6 under one side to level. At the time we didn't think too much about it. Also the wear from the spring against the frame indicated it had been that way for some time. Fortunately the frame is designed with a pocket to catch the spring if the bolt breaks (not so at the center shackles).

Yes, I believe it is a common occurance as I have a similar photo of that shackle bolt.
I carry 2 spares.
Regular inspection is the key to staying ahead of the curve on those sneaky problems.

Too much torque on one of these bolts can not cause it to brake in the middle or at the grease hole.
They are a "shoulder" type bolt that the nut tightens against the shoulder of the bolt itself.

Just for your information, I had a bitch of a time getting the new one in. The bolt was in two pieces, so I left one in place so the spring wouldn't fly away. I put the new one in and it wouldn't line up to the other hole. I used a big clamp and jack to move the the spring close enough to slide the bolt through. I think it would have been easer to take the wheel off, but, I found that out after the job was done.
