The Valley in Jan

We would like to go to the valley in Texas for the month of Jan for fishing and getting some dental work down.
All suggestions welcome. Where to? Cost?

Can't help you with the fishing since we don't fish, but maybe someone else can. Dental work--a good dentist and one that we use is Ismael Perez, right across the bridge in Progresso. In fact, Progresso is the only crossing we do anymore. His office is on the left, across the street as you come over the bridge. He was recommended to us by several people before we started going there. As far as parks, there are so many you can choose without a problem once you get there. If you try to reserve now, they all try to get you to commit to three months, though if you go and just show up, there is not a problem. The prices can vary greatly, though if you stay by the month it'll be cheaper and you pay your own electricity in most of them. I think you could count on paying at least $400 or so. We are going to stay at Paradise South in Mercedes January and February but we get a little discount because we also belong to Thousand Trails. Many of the parks have things going on so you can make use of the amenities, however, you can find some that are a lot less if you don't care about having any of those things. There are parks spread across from Brownsville and Harlingen over to McAllen and Mission--all in the little towns between. If you're wanting fishing too, you may rather have the Harlingen area so you can get over to Padre easily. Maybe others will have more specific information about that. Good luck and have a great trip.

Wilma and John, you're welcome. I had posted again, but guess it didn't go through. Stop at one of the information centers (there's a good one coming into Harlingen) and get information. There is one little booklet thing that has a number of parks in it--shows amenities, addresses and phone numbers. Also there is a brochure that shows the valley area--all the little towns and highways, so that will give you an idea about the area itself. At least you can call some parks and find out if they have sites available and the costs.

Also if you get on RV.net Open Roads forum, there is a big section on things in the RGV area--things to do, see, etc.

A copy of either (or both) Trailer Life and Woodall's Campground Guide would also have a lot of info for you to look at for parks in that area.

We work in the office of a CG in the Valley and nobody knows yet how this season will be, but based on previous years don't expect to find good sites by just driving into the Valley in Jan & Feb. There will be sites left, but they will be the less desirable ones in every CG and the premiere resorts will be full.

 Hi John and Wilma: I'm glad to hear that you are planning to head down to the valley for the winter. We will be at Golden Grove RV park near Mission January 15-February 15. It's a small park and no swimming pool. They do have a rec center with some fun and games. We stayed last year for a week and decided to go back. Don't know what you are looking for but Golden Grove was the best price we found.
