blown tires

Well last Sunday, the 21st, I left home to go to Elkhart,IN. to have some repair work done to the coach from a blown tire on the curb side. Well guess what, half way there I blew another one on the street side ( rear) and did another $3100 damage.

I went to charger RV in Elkhart and I want to say right here you will not find another repair shop that will do or can do any better of a job. In fact if anything ever happens again that's right where I'll go again.

What nice and helpful folks. Gerald and his wife as well as Billy the parts manager were extremely nice. The guys out in the shop were very capable as well as knowledgeable..

I highly recommend them!!!!

Well while I was in the Elkhart area I decided to switch the axles to 8000lbs, disc brakes (Kodiak) and replace the tires and wheels with 17.5's.

Hope these run better than the 16"s did. Time will tell.

Wow Ponch! You had your share for sure! Glad you got it all fixed and made the switch to the heavier axles and tires. Hope they provide better service.

They sound like good folks to deal with.

Cheers,
Bill

I just cannot say enough about their attention to the customer and their work.
I will at least feel better with these tires than the others.
I was under weight on the 7000lb axles and now I really am. LOL

I have gone over 12K miles with no tire problems after putting the 17.5 wheels on. The problem I do have is I have just blow the second caliper on my Kodiak brakes. Not fun when your on the Blue Ridge Parkway at 4500'. Will deal with the problem tomorrow when I get some place with phone signal.

How much air pressure are you running in the 17.5 tires?? I checked mine this morning when they were cold all were around 100 lbs. My guess is that they should be at least 115 lbs??? I tryed to put some more air in but my compresser could not handle the job, guess I will have to find someplace down the road soon to top them off.

That would be according to your weight.
The tires themselves are 125lbs.

I'm running 80 psi, BUT I have Michelin not GYs. They have a lot higher rating so I'm still covered for the 8K axles at 80 psi. Some times I think even that is too much as the trailer cam with 7K axles.

I run 125 in my 17.5's. FWIW I use pressure pro's on my tires and at first I ran them at 110 because the tire charts say that is enough and my compresser would only go that high. After the tires got warm the pressure went to about 140. I bought a new compresser so that I could run them at 125 because that is what GY recommended for all trailer tires (they told me to run at max stated on sidewall). Now when the tire get warm they go to about 140. In one case that is an increase of 30 psi and in the other the increase is only 15 psi. The reason for that is the tires are running cooler at the higher starting pressure. Since heat is what kills tires I believe I'll continue to start mine at 125 psi. In neither case do the tires feel more than warm to the touch.

Do you have a phone # for them? Also do you know if they have a website. I did a google search for Charger Rv and came up empty.
Thanks.

New axels & brakes

Ponch, I assume you had the upgrade done at Trailair. At the rally, Kent said that they woulde re-rate the trailer GVRW if the work was done (new sticker). Did you ask MS to re-rate your rig?
