Newer Trailer Question

Long time lurker and have absorbs a ton of information over the years. Wanted to throw out a question for discussion.

Local salesman says Thor influence on DRV build quality hasn’t been a positive. Says Thor has put cheaper fixtures, materials and some appliances in because they have the purchasing to power to buy those items for use across the spectrum of their RV models. Salesman says 2016 was possibly last year of former DRV quality.

I’ll post some other questions in other threads. Thanks in advance for the opinions.

I'll bet you were talking to a Redwood salesman. Fridge is better, dishwasher is better, and convection oven is top of the line. Better brakes AND suspension. We believe over-all it is a better unit.

We purchased 2019 MS 41RKSB4 in January. Pleased with appliances and fixtures, furniture, not so much. Have camped in it 4 weekends with no problems. Stays very warm inside during cold weather, looking forward to a better summer! Getting some warranty work done on drawer slides, but expected that from reading forum. Had a Winegard Traveler Dish automatic sat antennae installed last week at Camping World, they said wires were all where they were supposed to be-works great!

I too, got rid of a Redwood, and feel the same way. Price kept me from considering a Thor DRV, but after my experience with Redwood (owned by Thor) , was glad to get a pre-Thor DRV

I hadn't heard all of the ownership issues going on. I like the infrastructure of the DRV.

I figure it's like cars-they're all gonna break sometime. Getting in with the service dept. is the trick. I always bring my service manager a 6 pack!

Oh wow!! You found a better suspension than the Morryde? Tell me more!!
By the way=I've looked at a lot of Redwoods. Quality not there. If you were that happy with yours-go back. Problem solved for you

You decides which is better.

When I picked up my used 2011 the driver that delivered it has a 2017 DRV.
He said my inside was nicer then his 17. Just one persons opinion. He does deliver RV's for a living though. I'm sure he has seen lots of new & used RV's.

Bill, I've read and re-read this posting, and cannot find anyone who's saying Redwoodis better than DRV. Where are you reading it ?

Actually, that came from a salesman at our local DRV dealership. And he also said no way would we be happy in a Redwood.

Porkchop - Now I understand I thought Notan was writing about his DRV having a better refrig, better cooktop, etc. Best I not get started on all wrong with my Redwood. For what I paid for the REdwood and the repairs, I could have bought a DRV and saved myself the aggravation.

First pic is a Mobile suites door, second pic is what we would have had with Elite Suites. We have Elite Suites wood package but MS doors. Ours was ordered 5 days after Thor bought them and was one of the first 16's built.

Just to clarify post #2, I was saying that the appliances in our DRV are as good as or better than the old DRV's, not comparing it to Redwood. I only used Redwood as an example of a salesman's brand who might be trash-talking DRV to get a sale.

Barton, isn't that an odd thing for a sales person to be telling you! I'll bet their sales career will be short lived. Can't we all see a Chevy sales person saying "These new Silverado 3500's are sure pretty, but the quality and finish just isn't like back in '15." I would have to wonder where they were headed with that kind of statement.

Actually I’ve known this salesman for over 20 years, since before he was an RV salesman. He was in construction (very successfully) until an accident forced him into another line of business.

Rather than questioning the motives or the tactics of the salesman, I was hoping to getting feedback concerning the merit, or lack thereof, of his comments.

Love the KitchenAid full size frig, FisherPaykal dish washer and Whirlpool 220V clothes dryer.

Whirlpool clothes washer was a POS and now have a Bosch 500 series 220V.

Suburban cooktop/oven is just OK.

Thanks Ron. That’s the kind of feedback I was looking for.

DRV quality

I have a 2019 DRV 40KSSB4. Over 30 items found in PDI. More than 60 more over three warranty visits, some issues addressed 3x. Massive water leaking issues and resulting mold. Other that that, the build quality is excellent. I sure am glad I didn’t buy a cheap trailer.

Goober, I feel your pain. Seems you still have a sense of humor over it. Are you able to stay with the rig, at the location where being fixed, until everything is fixed ? At least then, when you leave the location, you'll be assured you won't need to go back.

To the OP, this is my first DRV so I can’t compare it to prior years. I can compare it in a useful way to another “luxury” fifth wheel brand (now defunct). The DRV seems superior in many ways but where they majorly fall short, based on my unit and many of the complaints I’ve read about, is water sealing performed at the factory.

I’ve purchased and USED seven RV’s and even the low end toy hauler I once owned, came from the factory with professional grade factory side caulking and proper slide roof membrane application. Why DRV would choose to scrimp in these critical areas is baffling to me.

My 2018 38RSSA had water penetration (slide roof and wall) while sitting at the dealer waiting to be sold. Even though it was repaired in the field, it was certainly bad enough to be given “used” status by DRV and was sold to me as-is at a heavily discounted price. I was of course given a boxcar load of BS about the trailer’s as-is status by both DRV and the dealer but I’m still thrilled about the deal.

I love my ‘18 38 RSSA but unless you’re committed to diligence with inspections and sealing (I’m a fanatic), stay away from this brand.
