Pinbox hitting bedrails

Hello all, I have a 2015 39DBRS3 with a Mor-Ryde pinbox. When I make a sharp turn the pinbox hits the tonneau cover rail attached to the inside of the bedrail. I have been lucky so far to stop when I hear it hit to not damage the bedrail. I have the truck hitch raised to its highest position but to get the rear part of the hitch to clear the bedrail it would have to be higher than the bedrail.
I have talked to MorRyde, Lippert and DRV and none of them have a solution. Is anyone else having this problem? Or a fix? In this picture you can see the metal sticking down at the rear that is almost level with the plate that rests on the 5th wheel hitch.

I have the same hitch pin as you and went out to look at it closely. To me the metal that is below the mounting bolts does not appear to have a purpose. If it was my trailer I would cut those two pieces off.

When I towed my MS, before I had a hauler body put on, the underside of the trailer was much too close to the rails. I use a Trailer Saver hitch which appears to be a bit lower than other hitches but I like to have at least 8 inches over the rails.

Same exact problem a friend had on his Chevy towing a different brand of trailer. After looking at the situation, and with his blessing, we cut those ears off and corrected the problem. Used some black paint to cover the edges we cut and he was a 'happy camper'.

Lippert says that if I cut those off it voids the frame warranty.

I'm a realist, what difference does it make? I guess tearing up my box rails is
something I would not live with. I'd cut the ears off to fix the problem. They would have a real struggle explaining to me and anyone else how that would cause the rest of the frame to fail.

Cut off. That's what I'd do Tom. Lippert are being stupid.

Tom, I had that problem as well and I trimmed off the cover rails where the hitch hit. Had to trim about 1/2" at the widest point. I used a sawsall. I measured where the hitch started hitting and then trimmed kind of a half circle. Call me if you want to discuss.

Kerry, the pinbox has a sticker on it saying 24,000 lbs with 6 bolts and 21,000 with 5 bolts. It has 6 in it now and if I lowered it it would have 5. I weighed the trailer at 20,200 so it should be good to try lowering the pinbox 1 hole. Then see if it clears and if it is anywhere near level since I have the 2" riser on the frame.

Tom,
Lots of years difference, same problem, MorRyde extended pin. I cut the metal angle that everyone above has said to to. Did it with a sawzall, painted the bare metal and have not had any frame problems. But my '05 is only 17400lbs and uses only 4 bolts for the pinbox.

I have a 2015 MS Dallas with 2" llift. The truck is a 2014 Ram 3500 4X4 dually with TrailerSaver hitch. Everything works well ( except the 5W, a lot of problems).

Assuming you have an adjustable RV suspension I would suggest you lower the pin box and raise the RV to level it out. This would give you more bed rail clearance.

No adjustable suspension, Mor/Ryde IS. If it ever stops raining and I can move without getting stuck I'll start measuring and adjusting. They brought in rock today to try and cover the mud but the rock truck got stuck. Need to get out of here and head to a dry spot, maybe California!

Interference, by how much does the pin box hit the bed cover rails, 1/8", 1/4", 1/2" 3/4", 1", etc?

When I helped trim the box for my friend we cut almost 1 inch off the ends, on an angle that left him enough clearance. You don't need to cut he whole box to get the box to clean the bed rail. Never touched the bolts or for that matter came close to them.

It didnt rain yesterday so I did some measuring and inspecting. Turns out the very low part of the box at the front is not what is hitting the tonneau rail it is the rear part of it which should be high enough to clear it. So next time I hook up to move I'm going to have to do some more measuring and inspecting.

Was it your idea to add the 2 inch riser to the frame or your dealer. I spoke with Kyle at DRV and he said they rarely add this feature yet Karen at RV's for Less who is the no 1 DRV dealer in terms of volume says she always specs this feature on all her builds. The concept makes sense to me to provide more clearance to the bedrails
Bob

Added 2" Riser to frame
