Info. on Folding Bed Covers

Not sure this is the place for this topic, but I'm looking for suggestions/experience with pickup bed covers. My inclination is toward a folding cover. I think it will be more durable and more secure than a roll-up cover. What about materials - fiberglass vs. aluminum. I'm leaning toward aluminum, again for durability. Who's had experience, good or bad, to recommend a folding aluminum bed cover. Or, is there a better choice? Thanks for the help. Jim R

Bill,
Thanks for the reply. The Fold-A-Cover is definitely of interest. Did you install it yourself? If so, how much of a job was it? And, how are the panels protected from rubbing/scratching against one another when in the stowed position?

I installed mine and think it looks and works fine. The only drawback I have found is that its frame overlaps the bed enough that a standard toolbox lid will not open.

I installed my fold-a-cover and it was no big deal. Straps are used to keep the panels from rubbing against one another and mine has been in use for two years and no problems in that regard.

There is a new cover on the market called the Advance Cover that is made by the guy that started the Fold-a-cover and he has changed the design a little. Apparently, from what I read, it is a little cheaper. Their web site is www.advancecover.com and there is more information from www.kcovers.com who is a dealer of the Advance Cover.

I agree with the comments on install, just allow a few hours and an extra set of hands for adjustment. Finshed product is good and lasts.

I add a quick clamp placed in the middle of the folded panels just to keep them from vibrating and causing abrasions, but just me being fussy!

I did run into issues with the tool box (fuel tank box combo) I modified the lid of the box so only 75% of it opens to clear the cover and had to shorten it about 2" to clear the brackets. Was worth the trouble though.

The only problem I have is ice in the locks, they have a rubber cover, but still freeze here in the great white north! I manage though.

Ref the Advance brand, a friend had one a few years ago, but changed to the Fold a Cover due to the latching and locking mech diff. Don't know if they have changed thier design?

I would buy another one if I changed trucks!
