Towing Question

I'm considering a MS 41RSSB4 with a weight of 17,400 empty. I have a Sierra 3500 DRW with towing capacity of 22,900. Will this be pushing the limits of my vehicle?

What is your rear axle weight rating? Mine is 9,750# and my actual weight sitting on the 4 rear tires loaded is 9,580#. I can guarantee you will need air bags.

These MS's get REAL HEAVY fast!!! Have you seen the actual weight sticker?

My sticker says 18,075# empty but magically I am at 23K.

What is your trucks combined weight rating? Pin weight is what will get you. Towing capacity does not mean squat. A 22,900# Mobile Suites will have about a 25% pin at 5,725#.

What is your GVWR? What is your GRAWR? A 17.5k empty (prob higher than that--ask Cummins--) is going to gross 21K? A 21k gross will have a pin weight above 4.2k, and will be a lot on that rear axle.
You need more weight figures to work with...

Cummins and Joe have already touched on this, but the manufacturer's "towing weight" ratings are really just a gimmick, or at very best, a ballpark figure. We have a 2008 Ford F450 that was claimed to have a towing weight back then of 24,600 lbs. I can guarantee that if my truck were to be loaded close to the truck's GVWR of 14,500 lbs and had a 24,600 lb trailer behind, the truck would be over the truck's GCVW.

GVWR of the 41RSSB4 on DRV's website is 21,000 lbs, and that is without anything in the way of extra options such as a larger inverter and extra batteries or a generator.

Extra options and appliances, like a washer and dryer, would chisel away at the cargo carrying weight (CCC) of the trailer. Our trailer came from the factory with a sticker saying we had 2850 lbs of CCC, which included the 3000 watt pure sine wave inverter and two extra batteries.

Also, what year of Sierra do you have? If it is a newer one with the taller bed rails, you may have an issue with clearance between the bed rails and the bottom of the overhang of the trailer.

I may need to consider a 36' instead. Great deals on 2015's at the moment but I don't want to make a mistake I may regret by buying a trailer that may be too heavy

5500# max tongue weight--is this the stated payload capacity?

You are going to have to do some more homework...first, you will need to actually weigh your truck (need both axle weights also) with as much stuff as possible that you would have in it when towing. Only then will you be able to know the actual payload number. Once you have this number, you will be able figure max tongue weight/rear axle capacity based on the Gross Rear Axle Weight by GM for your truck.
Actual truck weight taken from the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating will give you the remaining payload capacity, which should also be near the amount available for tongue weight of a new trailer. Once you have these numbers, you can think about what size/weight fiver you can handle.

My previous truck was a 2012 3500 dually. My Teton has a 6k pin and weighs 21kish. Had to have bags, bowed upper springs downward. Rode like a sled after this. As long as road is smooth you good, good luck. It's ability to tow the weight is not a problem. Pin is. 85 to 90% of max pin weight is fine. Max is not. I got rid of Chevy and got Freightliner Century.

Forgot to mention mine was a Chevy also. Plus the sides got in the way. Had to change bed. You could get a riser for this from DRV factory installed. That should solve clearance problem. People tow with these LDT trucks at these weghts. I did and was not satisfied with the results.

I do think you would be ok, but you still need to get the actual numbers on your truck for any towing situation. How 'bout a 38' model? If I had the opportunity to purchase again with similar floorplans, I would always take the 38' over the 36'.

Instead of air bags I installed tremac bump stops on my 2014 2500hd they sit above the axle and don't touch until you put on a load don't have to worry about air lines coming off
