Retailers who do not comply with labeling requirements for diesel fuel run the risk of a $32,000/day fine. There are specific requirements for the size and placement of the labels. In addition, it is illegal to fuel a vehicle requiring ULSD from a pump that is not labeled as dispensing ULSD.

Since June 2006 about 90% of highway diesel produced or imported for use in the U.S.A. has been ULSD.

The process of removing sulphur from ULSD also removes some of the naturally occurring lubricity of the fuel. Lubrication and anti-corrosion agents are added to ULSD before delivery to bring it back to EN590 specification. Sulphur itself is not considered a lubricant. There is also a 1% BTU/gal energy loss in the de-sulphuring process. There is no attempt to restore this. Engines are adjusted to compensate (i.e. lower compression ratio). Mileage may suffer as a result of the energy loss. It is expected this will also be in the order of 1%.

New diesel engines ('07 & up) can utilize up to B5 biodiesel. Blending with higher concentrations has to be done very accurately so as not to exceed the B5 level. Again the expensive Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is the vulnerable item should these limits be exceeded.

I visited only the RV pumps at Flying J's and all of them had the appropriate ULSD label. (see link) Apparently that is not the case at the truck islands.

Mike, your truck will run nice and clean. Good effort. Dave, thanks for the cudos for Ont. It is appreciated.
