Folks we know have one and love it. They removed the metal mattress base with all the springs and bars and replaced it with plywood. We did the same and found our old mattress was ok after it was on plywood.

I too removed the trampoline type base and replaced it with plywood with 2X2 supports in the middle between the plywood and the dropped frame.
It is much more comfortable with better support. I used two pieces of plywood so the head and foot would still raise up.
