New to Recreational trailer towing.
Is there a discussion of owners where I can get some ideas (good and bad) for brand of truck and engine for towing.

You can go on any RV forum and ask that question--most of the time the answers will be biased toward whatever the person answering owns and loves...
Also, be sure to remember that most of the truck mfgs rate their vehicles using the bare bones lightest model with one person on board---AND, most RV mfgs optimistically understate the as-delivered actual weight.
So, first you need to know WHAT you want to tow--size, weight, TT or fiver, etc. Then--gas or diesel?
I think all of the new trucks are excellent vehicles, but you do have to match what you buy to what you will tow, always remembering you may want to upsize the trailer in a few years.
Its a jungle out there and you need to do lots of research to be sure you don't make a $$$ mistake.

Personally, I would by a 3/4 ton Diesel, that will cover most anything. If you are going to pull real heavy say 14000 and above starting dry weight I would go with a 1 ton Dully. Some people are buying the big 550/650 diesel crew cab ford trucks and pulling there 5er because they are pretty close to the price of a dully but not as pretty...:)

Will we need to buy a long box truck, or will the short units work with the regular fifth wheels?

SWB will work, but you will probably need a slider hitch...

What about the B&W hitch?

B&W makes a slider, as do others. PullRite Superglide may be the only auto one...

I think all the American made are good- Buy as already stated you need to know the spec. on the 5er you are looking to pull. A typical 3/4 gas will have a payload greater than a comparable 3/4 ton diesel. When it comes to pulling a 5er it's payload- you have to look on the driver's door or door post for max loading. I would not even look at a 1/2 ton/ I have a 2016 Chev. 3/4 ton gas payload 2733 lbs. I looked at a 3/4 ton GMC diesel and the door sticker 2150 lbs. I have a 31' light weight 5er and my total pin weight is 2400 lbs. If going with a diesel go with a 1 ton.
