View Full Version : Is the "heat pump" in the AC unit or the furnace?

The DRV option list for a specific DRV Tradition we will be looking at tomorrow shows a "heat pump" option with an MSRP of $334.

It would SEEM to me that such a heat pump feature would be found in the overhead AC unit, BUT, this specific coach also has TWO AC units, which would imply the need for quantity = 2 for the heat pump, but it does NOT say "2".

So, is this heat pump feature somehow built into the furnace?

Or??

A heat pump is a air conditioner running in a alternate manner. In heat pump mode, the unit separates the heat but instead of expelling it to the outside, it sends it to the interior of the coach. The HP option is in your AC and yes you can have one AC or both with the HP option.
Be aware that they make more noise in the HP mode.

Ok! I guess the fact that the quantity is "1" on the option list means that only one of the AC units has the heat pump feature. Thanks for the quick reply!

A lot of units that I camp by have this option--the noise level IS higher and you can really notice it on some of them when outside.
Also, be aware of the high temp/low temp limitations on air-to-air heat pumps as the performance drops off as the outside temps approach >95d and <40d. Read up on them, or talk to someone who has them to see how they like them.
Lot of them out there now...

No, you can order your coach with all ACs having the heat pump option.

two heat pumps are nice. in temps between say 38 and up they do good job. as Joe said they dont run in colder than that and you need furnace below that anyway for basement.

We have had two for 10 years in our Suite. Use them all the time. Especially when elec is included in site rates. ha

Worth the extra cost IMHO.

Ours are not loud in or out but have heard others that are.

We are looking at a pre-existing new Tradition on the dealer site, so don't have the choice to add the 2nd heat pump. :(

We opted out of this option. They are energy hungry, noisy and inefficient in temps below 40 F. We camp in parks providing 30 amps, off winter.
Rarely used on our previous MS.

I agree with your points except for the energy comment. Heat pumps are about 2.5 times more efficient than electric resistance heat. You would have to have cheap propane and expensive electric to put propane on top.
