We have pulled a Rented Travel Trailer a few time using a half ton with the trailer package. Next year 2016 we will be in a position to purchase a tow vehicle and 5th wheel. I will be looking for used and a lite 5th wheel and F250? with a diesel. Of course not knowing what exact trailer at this time I can't say for sure what type truck. We will not be full timers but plan to go for a month or two at a time. Also we want to go every place in the US and Canada so being able to climb a steep hill is a must. Any thoughts or recommendations are appricated. Thanks

Any of the current diesels will pull a trailer like you are wanting--up and down any hills you might encounter. As to a 250/2500--there is little, if any, ride difference between the 250/2500 and the 350/3500s, so I would look at the 350/3500s in case you opt for a heavier trailer later. Short/long wheel base? Another decision...

Thanks Joe. I thought you needed as long bed to pull a fifth wheel?

Lots of variables as to whether a long bed is necessary--

Is the front of the fiver cut away in the lower corners? That will allow sharper turns.

Is the pin box on the fiver an extended model? That will set the trailer farther away from the truck cab.

Either of/combo of the above will help in the clearances--other than those, you can always use a slider hitch.

Also seriously consider dual rear wheels, we are running a F350 6.7 diesel with a long box, if you go for the short box you will need to mess with a slider hitch.

We just purchased a 2016 Open Range Light 5th wheel in May of 2015. We pull with a 1998 Dodge Ram 2500 4wd with the tow package. We have a 6.5' bed and have no issues with clearances. Towing with any gas engine is definitely more challenging than have a diesel; however, you use what you have! So far, no problems, including a trip from Memphis to Destin, Florida in September.
Our rig is the LF319RLS, which is the largest of the Light series. Dry weight is 8800lbs and fully loaded, we are right at 10500lbs.
