Anybody been in 50 - 60 mile an hour winds in their 5th wheel? Just wondered how they hold up. We got the edge of sandy coming tomorrow.

We've been in 45 mph winds, but just parked. I look at the forecast and if it's going to be above 25, I just stay put. Don't like to have a sideways gust move me over. We're in St. Augustine right now. We were going to leave on Friday but we're just going to stick it out with Sandy here until Monday. It would have to be pretty bad to flip a parked 16,000 lb. 5th wheel with 3 slides extended. Of course, an RV park with trees are a different thing. Here's hoping.

Hey Ron,

I was more concerned with the slide toppers ripping up. We're at about 18,000+ lbs so 50 mph isn't going to do much with that. We're near palm beach.

I've been in a few storms that had wind gusts up to 75 and 80. We also sat through hurricane Isaac in Louisiana. The rig has had no big issues with the stabilizers down but I did lower the roof sat dish and the big tripod internet dish had to be tied down with additional straps and still shifted. We do not have toppers. I did see rigs that had toppers in the other storms. Most had some of them left afterwards and a few had none. Like any other awning they are a wind sail and have a finite limit to what they can take.

I have not stayed in high winds. Mine has wheels on it and I use them.
I have seen 80,000 lb semis overturned in high winds while sitting in parking lots.

We spent last year riding out Irene in NH. Sustained winds of 70 and gust up to 80-85. Put the slides in and sat in the truck for about 6 hours during the worst of it. Then the winds dropped to 40 - 50 and we went back with the slides out. The toppers flapped and popped but otherwise were fine. If you get winds over 60 I would put the slides in and risk it. The trailer was very stable but the wife thought the toppers were going to go at any minute.

Well, as usual the media has over hyped the situation. I don't think we had anything over 40 mph and that was just a few gusts today. I had thought of pulling the slides in if it got up to 60 but it never did. i will go out tomorrow and check the screws on the track that holds the material to to the 5er since I heard many of the units have screws loose or missing or twisted off.
